More than 1,300 business, civic, and community leaders will gather at the historic Fox Theatre Atlanta for Midtown Alliance’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday morning, February 25, 2020.

With nearly 1,400 residential units and 3.5 million SF of office and retail space under construction, Midtown Atlanta continues to experience significant investment and development activity. More than 2,300 new jobs have been announced for one square mile of Midtown in the past 12 months, on top of more than 20K new jobs announced in Midtown since 2015. In addition, more than 30 transportation and public improvement projects are being advanced by Midtown Alliance, in partnership with the City of Atlanta, Georgia DOT and other entities.

“The Midtown Alliance Annual Meeting brings our growing community together to celebrate the progress we see all around us, and to preview the new initiatives and partnerships that will make Midtown even better as it grows,” said Midtown Alliance CEO and president Kevin Green. “The message this year promises to stretch our thinking about the future of the district.”

Now in its 42nd year, the event brings together businesses, residents, policymakers, civic partners and others – to strengthen relationships and learn about the issues that will define Midtown Atlanta in the next decade. The keynote address will feature insights from Bruce Katz, an international expert and author on how cities will thrive in the 21st century.

Through his research on global innovation districts, Katz came to know Midtown Atlanta in the context of its thriving innovation ecosystem that continues to draw international interest. He recently co-authored “The New Localism: How Cities Can Thrive in the Age of Populism,” which focuses on the rise of cities and city networks as the world’s leading problem solvers, addressing the tough issues of our time, including infrastructure, social inclusion, public life and economic competitiveness.

"There are only a handful cities in the world that are bringing in as much concentrated energy and growth as Atlanta," said Katz. "The advantage in Midtown is the strong corporate and academic presence, married with a mixed-use platform and investment in quality experiences at street-level. But there are still more moves to make on the innovation front, and more doors to open that can raise Atlanta's global profile as an inclusive, thriving place where civic leaders come together to create new solutions to challenges."

Katz’ message demonstrates that power is shifting downward from federal and state officials to cities and local actors such as business improvement districts, universities and civic organizations.  Katz, who recently founded the Nowak Metro Finance Lab at Drexel University, previously served as chief of staff to U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros.
