May 2020
Portman Holdings presented a three-tower project surrounding the H.M. Patterson and son-Spring Hill site. The ambitious project includes a hotel, residential office and retail space that would surround the historic mortuary. The Midtown Improvement District celebrated a 20-year milestone.
A consortium called Tenth Street Ventures presented a new parking structure with 40 residential/hotel units distributed in a colorful grid. The 160 square-foot units are intended to provide a unique option for the short-term rental market. Greystar also presented plans for a 34-story tower that would rise at the former site of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta. We also presented data on visitor growth in Midtown and our 2019 Progress Report.
A market research study identified demographic trends on residents, workers and visitors in Midtown. Three Midtown surface lots made critical improvements, and Bruce Katz, the keynote speaker of the 2019 Midtown Alliance Annual Meeting offered his views on the district’s next act.
The DRC kicked off the new decade by reviewing three projects: an expansion of the Campanile building that would include a six-story office and retail podium; a proposal by Trillist to build a 46-story residential tower at 1138 Peachtree Street; and renovation plans for Blake’s on the Park. Plus, a 2020 Work Plan preview from Midtown Alliance.
SCAD proposed an expansion to its Digital Media Center that would take design cues from its recently completed SCAD 40 building. Chicago-based Core Campus presented a student housing project at 960 Spring called “Hub on Campus.” Hanover Cos. announced its return to Midtown with a 40-story mixed-use tower at West Peachtree and the planned extension of 13th Street. Plus, Midtown Union broke ground in North Midtown.
November 2019
Savannah College of Art and Design presented a student union project that would include residential units, academic space, a retail store and an amenity space on the roof. Midtown buildings helped the City of Atlanta meet its Better Buildings Challenge goal earlier than anticipated.
October 2019
Toll Brothers returned to the DRC with updates to its 250 14th Street project, including a covered ground floor area with casual seating and an outdoor fireplace. Two Midtown projects were recognized by the Urban Land Institute’s Atlanta Chapter for their design.
The DRC gave Midtown Union developers a green light after seeing project updates that helped resolve previous issues related to parking deck screening and street-level facade. Toll Brothers presented its designs for a residential tower at 250 14th Street. Plus, a Midtown startup is all in on the low mileage movement.
August 2019
Toll Brothers returned with refinements to its proposal at 1018 West Peachtree to address concerns from the committee about pedestrian connectivity and parking deck screening. StreetLights Residential also returned with updates to its 5th and Juniper project that included improvements to the building design.
July 2019
Toll Brothers presented a two-tower project that would add 205 student housing units and 385 market-rate units at 1018 West Peachtree. Midtown Alliance released its 2019 Community Survey findings.
June 2019
StreetLights Residential proposed a 26-story tower at 5th and Juniper, adjacent to St. Mark United Methodist Church. The residential tower would include 299 market-rate units and retail space. A new development map offers a look at the district’s progress.
May 2019
Standardized signage introduced in the district helps guide drivers to the best parking locations, Colony Square unveils its new urban park space The Grove and pedestrian count data shows the most highly trafficked intersections for walkers.
April 2019
Graduates from Georgia Tech’s ATDC incubator detail why they chose to stay in Midtown, and the Midtown 2019 Community Survey launched.
Two buildings in Midtown, lilli Midtown and Interface, were recognized for exceptional building design. A new guide was introduced to help ease commuter stress, and we celebrated Midtown’s 2018 development wins.

We chatted with 2019 Annual Meeting Keynote Speaker Gabe Klein about e-scooters and micro-mobility. The Atlanta City Council also approved regulations for e-scooters, and Midtown geared up to feel the effects of the Superbowl taking place Downtown.
