In the spring of 1839, Felix Mendelssohn snatched a symphony from the jaws of oblivion; it was an unpublished manuscript by the late Franz Schubert, discovered in a dusty pile of papers. Mendelssohn conducted the work’s world premiere, lifting Schubert’s “Great” C Major Symphony to its rightful place among the very best of the early Romantics. At the same time, Mendelssohn was at home working on another early Romantics gem: his Violin Concerto.
This week, Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in two concert-hall favorites with an uncanny history. Maestro Stutzmann welcomes the rising-star violinist Daniel Lozakovich as soloist.
