West Peachtree and Spring Street “Quick Build” Projects Previewed at Open House
Projects will repurpose a travel lane and several on-street parking spaces for protected one-way bike lane

About 75 members of the community attended a City of Atlanta Department of Transportation open house at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Feb. 3 that previewed safety improvements planned within Downtown and Midtown, including the West Peachtree Street and Spring Street Quick Build Complete Streets Projects and the Piedmont Avenue Quick Build Complete Street Project (Ralph McGill Blvd to Ponce de Leon Ave) managed by Central Atlanta Progress.
The projects are part of Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ two year, $5M plans to bring accelerated safety redesigns to several Atlanta streets following the 2019 deaths of scooter riders, pedestrians and a cyclist.
City of Atlanta Deputy Commissioner of City Planning Doug Nagy gave a brief presentation on overarching goals for Atlanta's transportation network and the imperative for safer streets. In his remarks, Nagy described the objectives for the open house as threefold: get citizen input on acceptable tradeoffs to change the way the corridors are used, identify specific pain points experienced along each corridor, and provide general feedback about future transportation priorities citywide.
West Peachtree and Spring Quick Build Project Scope
Two of the streets slated for improvements are Spring Street between 3rd and 13th Streets and West Peachtree Street between North Avenue and 13th Street.
The scope of the project includes:
- retaining the existing one-way traffic operation
- repurposing one travel lane and several on-street parking spaces for protected one-way bike lane
- spot fixing the roadway where the bicycle facility will be installed.
The project is now in the design/engineering phase, which is anticipated to be completed by the end of Q1 2020. Read the project summary here. Midtown Alliance, through the Midtown Improvement District, is funding the design of the project, and the City of Atlanta is funding construction through RenewATL/TSPLOST funds.
