Mini Tour: Commercial Row Construction Headed for Next Milestone

Plaza enhancement to bring new trees, art installations and more to a historic intersection.

Published: 04/07/2022

Throughout the winter, construction crews have been hard at work on a new plaza at the intersection of Peachtree Street at Peachtree Place. This public plaza will bring new outdoor seating for public dining, more public art, wider sidewalks and more trees and landscaping to the district.

And soon, the project is headed for its next milestone as crews prepare the road for paving. The following steps will be to install landscaping, as well as a catenary or overhead cable net system from which to hang overhead art installations over the plaza.

Here’s a mini-tour of features the plaza will have upon its completion.

A Unique Public Space in the Heart of it All

Plans for the Commercial Row Commons space include:

  • New trees
  • A reconstructed ADA-compliant driveway
  • Improved alignment of the Peachtree Street and Peachtree Place intersection
  • Wider sidewalks and new ADA curb ramps
  • Lush landscaped median and plantings around plaza
  • Relocated traffic signal cabinet
  • Buried overhead utilities
  • Street repaving and restriping
  • Outdoor lighting and seating
  • A first-in-Midtown catenary system that will feature temporary art installations
  • The installation of “Sole Sitter" (pictured above), a 2013 bronze sculpture by Willie Cole, which was purchased by the City of Atlanta during the administration of Mayor Kasim Reed.

Here’s the site plan of the project.
