Midtown Transportation Reaches Over 100K Transit Passes Sold Last Year

Transit pass sales reach a new high in 2019 as employment booms in the district

Published 1/9/20

Last year, Midtown Alliance hit a new milestone by selling over 100,000 transit passes to area employers. Midtown Transportation, a commute-focused program of Midtown Alliance, manages the sale of transit passes through collaboration with MARTA, CobbLinc, Gwinnett County Transit (GCT) and Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA).

Midtown Transportation’s Transit Pass Program is a product of a partnership with MARTA that started in 2012. The partnership allows Midtown Transportation to provide discounted MARTA monthly passes to employers as well as streamlined ordering for each of the major transit operators in the region. These services couple with responsive customer service and troubleshooting, and work to simplify a process that would otherwise involve additional steps of coordination between employers and agencies.

While the Transit Pass Program has seen steady growth since its inception, the recent milestone of over 100,000 transit passes sold in 2019, an increase of 16% from 2018, marks an exciting moment in Midtown’s growth and its commitment to transit.

Growth Trend Over Time:

Transit Access a Draw in Fast-Growing Job Center

Midtown’s easy access to transit and pedestrian friendly street network are unique to our region. In the Midtown district, 96% of office buildings and 97% of residences are within a six minute walk of a MARTA station. Midtown is home to over 82,000 jobs within its 1.2 square mile area. Since 2015, there have been 21,000 new jobs announced in Midtown, with 2,300 of those announced in 2019 alone. Much of that workforce growth is taking place near transit stations: the North Avenue, Midtown and Arts Center MARTA Stations, and large company expansions and relocations like Anthem are bringing thousands of jobs into the district.

“We aim to remove as many obstacles as possible for commuters wanting to take transit and employers looking for ways to support employee’s taking clean commute options,” said Katie Marticke, Senior Program Manager of Midtown Transportation.

Of transit passes Midtown Transportation sold in 2019, over 50% were sold directly to Midtown employers with the remaining being sold to third party benefits administrators, who provide passes to regional employers, including many in Midtown.
