‘Complete Street’ Vision for Piedmont Ave. Offers Improved Access for All

The City of Atlanta’s Renew Atlanta Bond Program, in partnership with Midtown Alliance, is planning one mile of upgrades to Piedmont Avenue between Ponce de Leon Ave and 15th St. The goal? Improve safety and accessibility for all street users.

The City and Midtown Alliance took in significant input from the community to develop concept plans that address excessive vehicle speeds, fix unsafe pedestrian crossings, and add more connectivity in the city’s bicycle network. Work will include new traffic and pedestrian signals, a separated bike lane, better lighting and upgrades to crosswalks and curb ramps. This project will raise the bar on the travel experience along Piedmont, especially for people walking, biking, and with limited mobility. At the same time, it will have limited impact on people driving in the corridor.

Complete Streets: Equal Footing for People Driving, Walking, Biking

The Piedmont Avenue Complete Street project rose to the top as an important project in the Renew Atlanta Bond program because of its crucial role as a transition buffer between the residential neighborhood, Piedmont Park and the commercial business district.

“Traditionally, our streets were designed primarily to move cars, but we are now at a point where widening streets is impractical and unwise,” said Dan Hourigan, Midtown Alliance Director of Transportation and Sustainability. “A ‘complete street’ approach is about designing streets that are safe and accessible for all users, and is essential in dense, mixed-use places like Midtown.”
