Blast from the Past: Catalog Project Unearths Decades-Old Pics
Midtown Alliance has begun sorting and archiving our vast collection of digitized Midtown photos. Based on the amount of scrolling it took to flip through the images on our server, we had a hunch it was pretty big task: we’ve accumulated a whopping 10,500+ photos of Midtown through the years - and counting. We also found a wealth of images from decades back. In celebration of how far the district has come, we wanted to share a few interesting pics from Midtown’s past¶:
Aerial view of the Midtown Atlanta skyline looking east.
Aerial view of the former C & S Tower at the corner of North Ave and West Peachtree. When demolished, this site became home to the current home of the Bank of America Plaza, with the Southeast's tallest building.
Looking Southwest down Peachtree, the old First Baptist Church (Atlanta) before it moved to Dunwoody.
Located at 583 Peachtree St. the New Columbia Theater was known, at various times, as the Atlanta, the Erlanger, the Tower, and Martin Cinerama.
Located at 10th and Piedmont, the building housing Piedmont Laundry and Crown Camera is still there with Piedmont Cleaners and Caribou Coffee now among the tenants.
On the corner of North Ave and Piedmont this is now a Publix Grocery store and a Walgreens pharmacy. It was built in 1988 in a postmodern style incorporating whimsical elements such as a fountain with gold colored frog sculptures. Ahead of it's time, it never caught on and closed after about a decade.
The original “mansion” that was home to TBS. CNN and CNN2 (Headline News and now HLN) started here before moving downtown. Now it's completely surrounded by buildings that house Cartoon Network, Turner Classic Movies, Turner studios, and more. The mansion is still there.
Looking Northwest into the Woodruff Arts Center campus from what is now the Arts Plaza (15th Street) at the far corner of Colony Square.
Looking south towards the AT&T Tower, this shows the construction of the Midtown MARTA station.
