Sound design is the art and practice of creating sound tracks for a variety of needs.

Sampling — the practice of using an existing sound recording in another song — came into its own in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the emergence of hip-hop. DJs made samples on-the-fly while they played a show by manipulating vinyl records.

On the evening of January 11th, MODA would love your company for an introduction to sound design and sampling led by Travis Yeargans. In this Sampling 101 seminar, you'll hear about the history of sampling and take in ten of the most famous sampled tracks.

You'll also discuss legal issues related to sampling, the basics of music sampling, and the equipment needed to make a sample. Plus, you’ll even have an opportunity to try your hand in a sampling session!

Registration is just ‌$20 (or $15 for MODA Members), and this includes admission to MODA's current exhibition, Close to the Edge: The Birth of Hip-Hop Architecture.
