Project Overview
Midtown Alliance, in partnership with the City of Atlanta, is implementing improvements to Spring Street between 3rd St and 17th Street and West Peachtree Street between Linden Avenue and 17th Street. In September 2019, the Mayor’s Office announced a two-year, $5M plan to bring accelerated safety redesigns to several Atlanta streets. The West Peachtree and Spring Street Light Individual Transport (LIT) Lane projects are included in the rapid implementation strategy. This project will improve the two corridors for people on foot, on bicycles, and other mobility devices. Midtown Alliance managed the project's design and the Atlanta DOT is overseeing construction. To see the phasing of this project, click here. The scope of this project includes the following:
- Retain the existing one-way traffic operation
- Add a protected one-way bike lane by repurposing one travel lane and several on-street parking spaces. The bike lane will be delineated with a striped buffer, plastic flexposts, and wheelstops
- Resurface Spring Street and make spot pavement repairs to West Peachtree Street
Project Timeline
In early 2019, Midtown Alliance's project team began the scoping phase for more comprehensive "complete street" projects on both corridors. Following the Mayor's announcement, the scope of the project was reduced and the timeline accelerated. Midtown Alliance kicked off the Design and Engineering phase for the quick build project in late 2019. The City then took over to implement the improvements on Spring Street through a planned resurfacing project in 2020. The first phase of the Spring Street LIT Lane was completed in Q3 of 2021 with remaining phases of work on Spring and West Peachtree Street expected to begin in 2024.
Public Engagement
The City of Atlanta, as part of the Mayor’s Action Plan for Safer Streets, hosted a public meeting with Midtown Alliance and Central Atlanta Progress on February 3, 2020. The meeting discussed safety improvements planned within Downtown and Midtown including the West Peachtree Street and Spring Street Quick Build Complete Streets Projects -- and the Piedmont Avenue Quick Build Complete Street project (Ralph McGill Blvd to Ponce de Leon Ave) managed by Central Atlanta Progress.
