At its recent State of MARTA event, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) presented new initiatives that will power the future of transit in the region. The new projects shared from the podium address increasing demand for a safe, reliable, and sustainable transportation network that connects communities and reduces congestion.
MARTA General Manager and CEO Collie Greenwood provided a glimpse into the future of rail service with the unveiling of the CQ400 train. With Greenwood onboard, the new railcars entered Lindbergh Station, highlighting the agency’s big bet on transit’s future: the transit agency is investing some $700M on the new fleet that will include 224 railcars.
Transforming Service with Modernization and Innovation
During his State of MARTA address, Greenwood laid out groundbreaking projects that will transform the rider experience:
- CQ400 Railcars: The new state-of-the-art railcars feature open gangway designs, upgraded lighting and seating, digital displays, charging stations, and more. The first batch of railcars is slated to arrive for testing and planned deployment later in 2025.
- Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC): This cutting-edge technology will improve rail safety, efficiency, and on-time performance, making MARTA one of the most advanced transit systems in the country.
- NextGen Bus Network: MARTA’s comprehensive bus network redesign will offer faster, more reliable service. Frequent service routes will expand to 18 corridors, providing 15-minute service to substantially more riders. The new network will also feature consistent seven-day service.
- Fare Payment Upgrades: MARTA’s AFC 2.0 system will allow riders to use credit cards, smartphones, and smartwatches for seamless entry. Enhanced faregates will improve security and accessibility, marking a significant step forward in customer convenience.
Enhancing the Customer Experience
MARTA also shared updates on creating a safer, cleaner, and more connected experience for riders through:
- Safety Innovations: MARTA is enhancing safety with advanced programs such as a real-time crime center, joint bike patrols, and expanded MARTA Police presence.
- Technology Upgrades: Real-time train arrival information, a redesigned MARTA app, and updated station information screens will ensure riders have the tools and info they need.
- Transit-Oriented Development (TOD): Projects at King Memorial and Candler Park have transformed these areas into vibrant, walkable communities, addressing housing affordability and fostering economic growth. Future projects at Indian Creek and Kensington are anticipated to do the same.
“The future is now, and it’s happening at MARTA,” said MARTA Board Chair Jennifer Ide. “We are breaking ground, launching innovative services, and expanding our system to meet the needs of our growing region. Together, we’re building a brighter, more connected future for metro Atlanta.”
